Today students wrote their science PAT.

Dear Parents/Guardians:

As part of our ongoing learning, students at Beddington Heights School will have an opportunity to participate in a traditional smudge on today. Smudge involves burning a small amount of dried plant such as sage, sweet grass or cedar inside a cast-iron dish or abalone shell. During smudge, participants sit in a circle and listen to the Elder/facilitator offer teachings about the practice and its role in historical and contemporary Indigenous communities. The smudge bowl may be passed around the circle as part of this traditional way of opening or beginning time together. Participation in smudge is informed, voluntary, and always connected to learning. If, for any reason, a student is not participating in the experiential learning, the teacher will ensure that associated learning outcomes are available. The inclusion of Indigenous perspectives and experiences in classrooms is supported and encouraged by The Education Act, Section 16. This experience connects to various outcomes in the Alberta Programs of Study which demonstrates Alberta’s commitment to First Nations, Metis and Inuit Perspectives and experiences in curriculum. We are honoured to offer this learning opportunity to our students.

Today in room 16:

We started our morning with some DEAR before diving into math. For math today I gave the students a large chart to work on that compares decimals, percents, fractions, pictures and equivalent fractions.

Below is a simpler version you can try for yourself.

After math we moved into social and continued our exploration of the Iroquois Confederacy. The concepts today talked about the wampum belts, the great peace and the responsibilities of men and women. Here are two great videos to watch! Video Video 2

For tech time today I had the students complete the Math Program Intervention Instrument or MIPI that they did at the start of the year. This 30 question test measures what they knew in grade 5 compared to now.

In the afternoon we learned about how to identify different finger prints based on their characteristics. We looked at how finger print ridges can have whorls, arches, and loops. These are characterized by their deltas or number of little triangle shapes. Finger prints also have other little details that help them to identified as well. Ridge endings, dots, islands and forks are big characteristics for individual finger prints. We then used paint to recreate our finger prints on our drawn hands. We will break down the finger prints and identify the details tomorrow! Here is a great website to explore the different fingerprints.

Hope everyone has a great evening!
