 Happy Monday Nov. 29, 2021!

November Spirit day is this Tuesday, Nov 30th, and it is crazy hair day! Students and staff will wear their craziest hair styles they can whip up this Tuesday!

December Spirit Day is the last day of school this term, Friday Dec 17th, and it will be Festive Holiday themed.  That could mean, ugly holiday sweaters, dress as Santa or his elves or his reindeer or a snowmen/women, or even a lit-up holiday tree! Basically, anything to get into that holiday cheer!

Reminders:

  1. Please return signed IPP's ASAP
  2.  Poetry projects were due Tuesday Nov 16
  3. Trees and forests project due Friday (Dec 3)
  4. November Spirit Day Tuesday Nov 30th - Crazy hair day
  5. December Spirit Day Friday December 17th -Holiday themed
Today in room 16:

We started our morning with DEAR before moving into some math.
Today in math we learned about perimeter and how perimeter is distance around an object. We then practiced finding perimeter of simple polygons and some irregular shapes.
Below is a video from Math antics to practice. Perimeter

After math, snack and recess we continued our exploration of the spirit bear novel.
Today we read chapter 5, answered 5 reading comprehension questions and researched some vocabulary from the first 5 chapters.
If you were away today here is a digital version of the book.

I then gave the students an additional hour to work on their science projects. They are starting to come together! They are due this Friday so students should be starting to do their research tomorrow or Wednesday to meet the deadline.

In the afternoon we had a guest speaker from the Calgary stampeders who came to talk to us about internet safety and cyber bullying. The students loved hearing from the team and different ways to protect yourself from cyber bullying.

Mayor's Food Drive + Loonies for Lunches

With the holiday season soon approaching it's important to care for others and give back to those who are less fortunate than us.  This holiday season, Beddington Heights School will be a part of 2 programs that the city of Calgary runs for those less fortunate.
The first program is Loonies for Lunches.  Loonies for Lunches would bring students together to collect loonies to donate to the food bank. Each school and/or classroom would create a donation box to collect the loonies and perhaps have some healthy competition to see which class could raise the most. The loonies would then be used by the Food Bank to purchase food for our Weekends and More program that makes sure kids get the nutritious food they need on the weekends to stay healthy and learning.
The Mayor's Food Drive is where we collect non-perishable items, i.e. can goods, sealed boxed items, for Calgary's Food Bank.  Both programs start this Monday to Dec 14th.

Today in room 16:

We started our morning with some DEAR and catch up time. This carried us into Robocoding and laptop time. During laptop time students could do mathletics, prodigy or research for their science projects.
After Disney Thursday, snack and recess we had some time to read our novel study (Touching Spirit Bear). Today we read chapter 4 and answered the reading comprehension questions for chapter 3 and 4.

During phys ed the students were completing their fitness and skipping stations. For the last ten minutes we had a competition to see if the students could beat me in skipping for the longest. I unfortunately lost.....again.

After phys. ed. I gave the students an hour to work on their science projects. These projects are due next Friday! They are coming along and starting to look pretty good!

In the afternoon we had recess, mindfulness, and health taught by our guest speaker. Today we learned about how to go grocery shopping!

Looking forward to seeing everyone this evening for interviews.

Today in room 16:
We started our morning with DEAR and a chance to talk about our weekend. We then moved into math and learned about the metric system. Measurement is our next unit and we will start with conversions then move into measuring area, perimeter and volume.
After math we had Marvel Monday and snack before heading out to the playground for recess.
Upon returning inside we started our novel study: Touching Spirit Bear.
Today we got to know the book by looking at the cover, making predictions and finding the author and when it was copyrighted.
We then took a break to head off to gym to do fitness activities. When we returned we started reading chapter 1. In this chapter we met Cole, learned that he is going to take part in a circle justice, and may go to jail for seriously injuring another student. The book can be found on the link at the top of the page so you can read along if you miss a day! After chapter 1 we also answered the following questions below:

Chapters 1- Chapters 1-2, pp. 3 2, pp. 3 2, pp. 3-25
1. How long will Cole be in Southeast Alaska?
2. What kind of Native American is Garvey?
3. How old is Cole?
4. Why is Cole in trouble this time?
5. In the past, how did Cole act when he got in trouble?
6. What is Cole’s plan to avoid jail?

We also had a short social lesson today introducing the students to local government. Today we learned that governments provide services to the people in cities and towns. Tomorrow we will learn how!
The afternoon was spent learning about the end of unit science project. This can be done in partners or solo!
The rubric and powerpoint can be found below.
Have a wonderful Monday and weekend everyone!
Please make sure you eat well, drink water and get some sleep!
Tis the season to be sick.
Mr Lancee
