In the afternoon we started our Black History Month presentations. Students present their chosen individual and then answer questions provided by me to show their understandings.

Have a great day everyone!

Local Government Test tomorrow!

Today in room 16:

We started our morning with some laptops to do some mathletics on our new unit, transformations. We will look at this unit more in depth tomorrow.

After math we did a short LA lesson and learned about characters in story writing. We created a stick person and then chose a character to describe everything about the given character. When we write, we have to describe the characters appearance, personality and how their values will connect to the main conflict.

After LA the students had gym and music before heading off to science. In science today we explored the planets.

In the afternoon I spoke to the students about some of their behaviour during lunchroom. They have been informed that if they are disrespectful or do not follow the rules their privileges will be swiftly removed and they will sit in their desks and have to be quiet. I hope this does not have to happen.

We finished off our day with a big social review before our local government quiz tomorrow.

Hope everyone has a great day.

Angles and Triangles Test Friday!

Edmonton Spelling Test was today!

Local Government Test will be next week. I will hand out a review tomorrow.

Today in room 16:

We started our morning with some DEAR time for reading give it a shot. I have been totalling up the values for each of the reading times and students will start earning cards tomorrow!

Next we had social studies and looked over a review study guide for our local government test coming up next week! Students now have all the terms we have learned, the notes and a process for passing a bylaw in hand.

In math today we did a big review of angles, triangles, quadrilaterals and using protractors.

After library we went to gym to play some 4 on 4 games of floor hockey.

I decided to move the Edmonton Spelling Test to today as we had a nice big chunk to complete it.

For black history month I introduced a project in which the students are researching and reflect on the achievements and lives of individuals of African descent.  Students will be creating a powerpoint presentation to share with the class about their selected individual. Students chose who they would like to research and spent about 30 minutes working on their projects.

Have a great day everyone!

Edmonton Spelling Test will be Thursday.

Local Government Test will be next week. I will hand out a review tomorrow.

Today in room 16:

We started our morning with our class meeting and appreciation circle. We had a chance to share about our weekends, a goal for the week and what we would like to learn about.

Next we moved into math and learned about reflex angles and quadrilaterals.

After math we had snack and finally went outside for recess!

Next I gave the students a chunk of time to write about their space art. The descriptions needed to describe What they were, What they are made of, when were they discovered/by whom, and where they are found.

I then had an hour to introduce the students to story writing. We started by focusing on beginnings. Our beginnings must introduce a character, setting and some exciting conflict to hook the reader.

In the afternoon we had a conversation about how some students have been showing rude or disrespectful behaviour today. We talked about why this might be and did a mini activity to come to terms with why we might be upset.

We finished our day by exploring the textbook and learning about the government structure of local governments.

Have a great day everyone!

Today in room 16:

We started our morning with some catch up time to finish the math, art, social and science from the week. We now have our space art up on the walls for all to see!

The hour after this time spent was spent learning the ins and outs of Minecraft education! This week the students had fun in creative mode exploring how the program worked. Next week we will start building our own city.

We then moved into a large debate style city council meeting in which we investigated a proposed bylaw written by a student. The students argued for and against the bylaw and met as cousillors between each round of debates. Afterwards they voted on the motion and the motion was rejected. Very cool experience for all the students!

We finished our morning with gym and an appreciation circle to review how we showed love this week and review our weekly goals.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Mr Lancee

Parents – just a reminder that our patrollers are on duty each morning in rain, snow, and fine weather (We do not patrol on blue days).  Could you please wait until they call, ‘Point, double-check, and proceed,’ before making your way between the pylons and safely across the street.

Patroller schedules were sent home today! Please ensure your children are familiar with their day and time. We are only doing morning patrols for now. Please arrive at 7:45 am, get ready, be on the crosswalk with your team at 7:50 am. Shifts end just after 8:00 then students will head to class. Subs should also be on time in case they are needed!

Please also be aware of our parking guidelines.

They are:

-no parking for any length of time in the bus zone!

-no parking within 5 metres of a stop sign or cross walk or corner of 2 streets (Tell them they should be able to take 5 large steps between their vehicle and any of these)

-stay out of the staff parking lot

Thank you as well to our Patrol parents who ensure our students arrive on time to volunteer.  It’s greatly appreciated!

Social Cities are now very late. Parent calls have been made. Please ensure work is being completed on time.

Today in room 16:

We started our morning with our Moon and ROAR (Rotation, orbit, axis revolution) quiz. They have been marked and sent home to be signed and returned.

We had a short math block today doing Mathletics on laptops after our quiz.

After snack and an indoor recess we watched a few Pixar shorts. I am using the Pixar shorts as a way to help teach the students about plot mountain. We first watched Day and Night to see characters, settings, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action and the resolution. We broke it down as a class then I had the students examine the short Burn-E. They filled in the different sections of the plot mountain independently before going over it as a class.

For social studies today we looked at different Calgary bylaws. After exploring a large list of the different the bylaws in Calgary we got to work on creating or amending our own bylaws. The students needed to create a concern that could actually happen within their city. From this they bring the concern to a councillor who will bring it as a motion to city council. Tomorrow students will be doing a mock city council debate in which they will be for and against the passing of the bylaw. We will debate and vote on whether the new bylaws will be passed.

In the afternoon we created some space art! Students had free reign on their space designs of a celestial body or object. We used chalk pastels, crayons, paint and black paper to design our space art. Pictures will be coming soon!

Hope everyone has a great day!

Mr Lancee

Patroller Training tomorrow

Science quiz- Moon and ROAR Thursday!

Social Cities are now very late. Parent calls have been made. Please ensure work is being completed on time.

Attention all patrollers,
On Wednesday February 2nd you will be receiving patroller training in the gym from 8:30-9:30am.
An announcement will be made when the patrollers need to come for training.
We will have our schedule sent out shortly after the training is complete.
Patrollers will only be patrolling in the mornings for now. Hopefully, we can have some parent volunteers join us so we can do pm patrolling.
Thanks,
Your patrol supervisors,

Mr. Lancee and Mr. Shackelton

Today in room 16:

We started our morning with a class meeting and appreciation circle. In our circle I asked the following questions...

What do you want to learn about this week?

How can you show our pillar of the month love?

What is our weekly/personal goal?

The students had some great answers for all three questions!

After our circle we had math and did a big review of triangles and how to identify them by angles and sides. If you are looking for extra practice head over to mathletics to complete some work!

Today it was too cold to be outside so we had an indoor recess. Afterwards we started a new LA unit and learned about the plot mountain. The plot mountain teaches us about all the structure of narrative stories.

Introduction/exposition---> rising action----> climax----> falling action-----> resolution

In science today we reviewed the moon phases. There will be a quiz on the moon phases and ROAR (rotation, orbit, revolution, axis) Thursday!

We finished off our afternoon by exploring the grade social studies textbook. We reviewed key terms looked over real life examples and answered questions together.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Mr Lancee
