Congrats to the pillars of care winners in room 16! Our virtual pillars of care assembly is on Friday Oct 1!

It has been a very busy couple of days here at room 16!

Yesterday was the Terry Fox Run and our class raised over $80. During the run itself we ran about 230 laps! The school raised over $450!

Today was Orange Shirt Day at BHS.
We spent the day learning about Why wear orange on this day and what took place at residential schools.

Our morning started with learning about the tobacco offering we would be making for the school smudge.
I let all the students see the tobacco (which is one of the sacred herbs, alongside cedar, sage and sweetgrass) and showed them how we wrap up the offering.
This video helps explain the meaning behind the tobacco offering: Video

We then went outside with the school to take part in a smudge. We acknowledged the land, listened to the orange shirt story, heard a traditional drum song, and participated in the smudge. Sacred herbs were burned and we shown how we use the smoke to cleanse our minds and bodies and support seeing, hearing, speaking, thinking positive things.

During snack we watched a song that was created to bring awareness to Chaney Wenjack, a boy who died escaping a residential school. After recess we had library and DEAR before having a group activity that compared our lives to Chaney and Phyllis (Both attended residential schools). It was a powerful discussion that helped students be thankful for all they have and hold dear.

We also attended a WE event in which we watched a session that gave us some information about potential charities we could involve ourselves in.

Each student created a shirt that is posted in our classroom as a way to remember that Every Child Matters and that we will remember this orange shirt day and what happened in residential schools.

The students had gym with Ms Sterne playing soccer and lunch before heading out for afternoon recess.

We finished our day with mindfulness and a reading comprehension activity in which students answered questions about the orange shirt story we had also heard during our smudge.

Tomorrow is truth and reconciliation day. There is no school for BHS students. Please take the day to think about what we learned on orange shirt day and how you feel about truth and reconciliation.

Today in room 16:

As today was a day 3, we started our morning with DEAR time and some Notes of Care for our classmates.

We then moved into math and practiced writing decimal numbers in standard, written and expanded form.

After math we had snack and watched CNN10 before heading out to the baseball diamond for recess.

When we came inside we had a short LA block in which we talked about the difference similes and metaphors. We learned that they are both comparisons, but similes use "like" or "as" when comparing two things. Students worked in pairs to brainstorm examples of both and then explain what they mean. For example, Student is a sweet as candy.

After LA the students had music with Mr Wiens before gym. In gym today we ran laps to prep for the Terry Fox Run tomorrow.

The last chunk of our morning was spent looking at different types of leaves. We compared the leaves based off their shape, arrangement, and classification such as deciduous or coniferous.

In the afternoon we had recess on the field and mindfulness indoors before social studies. In Social we talked about why it is important to contribute/get involved with groups before finishing our cell phone debate from last week. Final answer to the question: Should cell phones be allowed in class....ended in an overall No! The students felt the risks of distractions, cyber bullying and inappropriate behaviour outweighed the benefits of cell phones in class.

Have a great evening everyone!

Today in room 16:

We started our morning with some dear instead of our planned debate due to an incident. The incident was resolved and our morning was resumed.

In math I had the students working on computers and ipads completing mathletics assignments. These can also be completed at home for extra practice :)

After snack and recess we moved into some language arts and started writing our first poems for poetry today. I had the students writing couplets and quatrains on any topic of their choice. The poems had to rhyme and use an AA or ABAB or ABBA or AABB format. Every student shared their poems to the class after they finished.

After lunch we had recess and mindfulness before starting a self portrait. This was our first self portrait of the year and I gave the students very little instruction on how to actually draw the parts of their face. The students could use a mirror check a screen to double check their individual features. I will post the pictures up in the classroom for all to see!

No school tomorrow!

Looking forward to meeting everyone this evening :)

Last year we raised $1017.85.  Let’s see if we can raise even more this year!!!

Today in room 16:

Today was an exciting and outdoor filled day for the students of room 16. With it being the first day of fall I scheduled a number of activities outside to experience the changing of seasons.

In the morning we started with math and reviewed how to compare decimals in standard, expanded and by place value. Students will be expected to know up to the thousandths (.001) but I am pushing them to learn up to the millionths(0.000001)! Knowledge is power!

After CNN10 and recess on the playground we went inside for library and DEAR.

Today we prepped for the Terry fox run next week by running laps in the gym and then playing soccer.

After soccer we went outdoors and used our senses to describe fall using our senses. Students observed crunchy yellow leaves, brisk wind, sharp green grass, and bright blue grey skies. This concept of imagery will be used throughout poetry and story writing this year.

We remained outside for a bit longer and explored some coniferous and deciduous trees around the fields. We noticed that the cone bearing conifers and changing leaves of the deciduous were going through some large changes this time of year! Students filled in a venn diagram to compare the similarities and differences of these trees.

After lunch we had recess on the baseball diamond before continuing our outside education with a sit spot. This act of mindfulness had us laying or sitting on the grass somewhere and just taking in the sights, smells, sounds, and feels of nature. If the weather is nice we will mix up indoor mindfulness and outdoor sit spots.

The last chunk of our day was spent putting our learning about decision making into action.

We have learned how decisions are made by comparing pros and cons, consequences, facts, opinions, how will this affect others, will it break any rules. Today's topic: should cell phones be allowed in class? I put the students into groups of four and had them brainstorm the pros and cons of the topic. They then chose whether they were for or against the topic and shared their ideas. We then brought up a hot button issue like using cell phones in place of laptops. Students argued for or against peoples arguments. The debate was heated but students loved being able to share their opinions!

We decided to take a recess until the next day and continue the debate first thing in the morning.

Have a wonderful Wednesday evening everyone!

Mr Lancee

Today in room 16:

We started our morning with a review of place value. Students had to fill in a chart that had them writing numbers in expanded, written and standard form. We continued our exploration of place value by learning about decimal place value. Watch the math antics video here for more info!

After snack while watching CNN10, recess in the field, we had 30 minutes of reading. During reading times I am testing students on their decoding and comprehension.

In LA we started to learn about poetry! Today we focused on what poetry actually is and the key terms. This was a good review of the literary devices we covered last week.
These terms are:
Alliteration
Onomatopoeia
Rhythm
Rhyme scheme
Sound
Repetition
 and more to come!

We then moved into social and started to explore decision making
Questions such as:
Why do we have rules?
Why do we have societal rules?
Why do we have a government?
...were the main focus of the day today.

The students had gym with Ms. Sterne outside today before heading in for lunch. After recess and mindfulness we moved into science.

Science today had us exploring deciduous trees! We looked in detail at what makes a deciduous tree deciduous. We finished the last chunk of our morning by watching a small chunk of the forests episode of one planet.

Have a great evening everyone!

We then had our weekly spelling test on the different literary devices. The tests were marked, corrected and returned before enjoying our snacks.

The next chunk of the morning was spent logging into google classroom, accepting invites and then working on mathletics assignments. I have assigned the entire place value and decimal place value unit. Students can (and should) try to finish any unfinished assignments at home when possible.

We also had our student vote today! Students individually voted behind a voting screen using ballots with the candidates in the Calgary Nose Hill district.

After a great game of soccer baseball we handed out notes of care and had an appreciation circle.

Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

  11. This Friday we will be having our student vote for the upcoming federal election!
Today in room 16:

We started our morning with some basic fact practice and catch up time on our spelling words, science notes and math posters.

Next, we continued our math from the previous day, focusing on writing numbers in standard, written and expanded form. We will be taking up this work tomorrow!

After math, we had snack while watching CNN10, and then had an indoor recess.
Link to CNN10

Room 16 enjoyed a half hour of quiet reading time before Mr Wiens joined us for music. We then moved  down to the gym to play our first day of spike ball! Today was a chance for the students to practice spiking the ball and just experiencing the game. Tomorrow we will practice keeping the ball in the air up to 3 times.

The next chunk of our morning we focused on politics and the student vote. The student vote is a wonderful way for students to get involved in politics and learn about how their voice can be heard in government. Yesterday I introduced the students to the concept of political parties, voting and the election. Today we watched videos with questions, made by students, asking the political party leaders about their views. Each time a question was asked the students chose a political party that similar values to theirs. Everything was kept anonymous. Students will use this research to make informed decisions about which party they will vote for on Friday!

In the afternoon we had recess outside and mindfulness before continuing work on our literary term posters. These posters are designed to help students use strong devices such as simile, hyperbole and dialogue in their writing. They will be written up on the wall so students can use them while they are doing writing in class.

Hope everyone has a great evening!
Mr Lancee :)

Today in room 16:

We started our morning with some computation practice before moving into our regular math block. Today we took up the place value booklet from last week that had us comparing numbers and writing numbers in expanded, standard, and written form. We then took some notes on what the different forms of these numbers looked like!

After snack and recess we had some time to copy down our new spelling words. Each week the students will work on these spelling words and sentences. They will be tested on the word every Friday unless it is a short week. The words are:

Spelling words Week 1

1. Simile

2. Metaphor

3. Personification

4. Rhyme

5. Rhythm

6. Verse

7. Stanza

8. Onomatopoeia

9. Scheme

10. Symbol

11. Alliteration

12. Poetry

13. Abstract

14. Expression

15. Concrete

After LA we had a short social block talking about decision making. I posed two scenarios to the students.
1. A friend invites you over to play video games on a Friday.
2. A friend tells you to take another students phone and send a hurtful message to someone.

We then broke down how decisions are made by first considering...
-Pros and cons
-How will it effect others?
-Did I research the topic?
-Does it break any rules?

After lunch  we had recess and mindfulness before exploring the different types of forests. Today focused on the Taiga or Northern boreal and the Temperate forests. We watched some videos, took some notes and drew some pics to help us remember what we wrote!

Hope everyone has a marvellous Monday!

Today in room 16:

We started out our morning with a visual shapes puzzle to get our math minds in gear.  People Are Struggling to Guess How Many Triangles Are in This Photo

This image is not the one we did but it is a very similar concept.

We then did the MIPI or Math intervention program instrument as a way to measure the students understanding of grade 5 concepts. This carried us to recess, then snack and then finally back inside to mark it.

After putting up the remainder of our name tags for our DL boards and coat hooks the students had their first music class with Mr Weins.
We then had gym outside on the compound playing different compound games.
The last chunk of our morning we learned about the circle of courage. The Circle of Courage is based in four universal growth needs of all children. This circle helps students to understand the importance of generosity, belonging, mastery and independence. These four key principles are essential for students as they grow and learn how to become young adults.

The Circle of Courage: Building Resilience – Terry Johanson Consulting

After lunch, recess and mindfulness we moved into creating our own unique handprints that would encircle the circle of courage. We as a class will work towards always showing and supporting others with follows the values in the circle of courage.

We finished our day by checking off a few house keeping items such as finishing work from the day, making Zones of Regulation posters, KWL poster for our trees and forests questions and knowledge, and cutting out leaves for our upcoming leaf exploration unit.

Have a Truly Terrific Thursday everyone!

Today in room 16:

Welcome back to another amazing week in room 16 everyone!

Today we started our morning by talking about our weekends, assigned classroom jobs, and wrote we are learning about in the four core subjects on the subject wall.

We then moved right into math and completed four computation questions involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. I pushed some students to already start working with decimals! After going over the answers we started to explore some place value concepts. We made notes on how to write numbers from 0-1,000,000,000 and their place value. We will continue working with place value all week.

After snack and recess we began working on our Pillars of Care documentation of learning board. As a class we planned out the board and then split into groups of 3-4 to create the 5 pillars and examples of how we can show each.

Once lunch, pm recess, and mindfulness were finished we used the rest of the day to continue working on our pillars. Students also created signs, arrows, cut pictures and created questions for other students to answer.

We then cleaned the class and went on our way!

Hope everyone has a terrific Tuesday evening!

Mr Lancee

Friday September 3, 2021

Happy Friday September 3, 2021!

Reminders:

No school Sept. 6

Return classroom contract by Tuesday Sept 7.

Return updated digital citizenship form by Tuesday Sept 7. (Sorry! I was given a revised form to send home Friday)

Today in room 5:

We began our morning with another ice breaker to learn names and what we would bring to a deserted island. I wanted to get to know the students more, so I had everyone write a "Letter to Mr Lancee" detailing their interests, hobbies, and anything they would like me to know. After snack and watching CNN10 (A kids news network that focuses on real life issues around the world) we played a class bingo game. For this bingo game everyone had to write 9 things they did over the summer and find students around the room who did similar things. We then went outside for gym and played a big game of soccer baseball on the baseball diamond. We finished off our morning by having an appreciation circle and talking about things we loved this week and just random stuff we wanted to share.

It was a wonderful first week back with the students in room 16.

Next week we dive into the curriculum and will continue to grow as a classroom community!

Have a fabulous Friday and a great long weekend everyone!

Mr Lancee

Thursday September 2, 2021

Happy  Thursday September 2, 2021!

Reminders:

No school Sept. 6

Return digital citizenship forms by Tuesday Sept 7.

Return classroom contract by Tuesday Sept 7.

Today in room 5:

It was another great day for the students in room 16!

We started our day with a game to practice learning everyones names and their favourite hobby.

I then took the class contract rules the students created and added a few of the school rules to form our official class contract. The contract was sent home today. Please sign, review and return it ASAP.

Room 16 did their first quiz in math today with a basic facts test. The test was marked, returned and will be sent home for parents to view hopefully tomorrow!

We also did the Edmonton Spelling Test this morning! This test consists of 50 spelling words which we marked and will also be sent home ASAP :)

Both tests are a starting point and make a great start for at home practice!

The grade sixes also worked together to untie a criss crossed string puzzle. This collaborative effort had the students working to straighten out a long string that they had criss crossed like a spider web. Just like life, we worked together to solve problems!

In the afternoon we had recess and mindfulness before starting our second day of engineering projects.

The students again worked in groups of 3 or 4 using marshmallows and pasta to build a structure that could hold up the weight of a textbook. In the end, many structures were squished but the students had a wonderful time working together!

Have a terrific Thursday everyone!

Wednesday September 1, 2021

Happy Wednesday September 1, 2021!

Welcome back to your first day of school and grade 6 everyone!

Reminders:

-Digital citizenship forms were sent home today. Please sign and return them so we can use laptops ASAP!

-No school Monday September 6

-Please make sure your child brings a water bottle, snacks and a lunch each day

-Students require indoor and outdoor shoes if they do not have them already

This short week we are getting to know each other build some relationships through  games, activities, and work.

Today in room 16:

We started our morning by entering the school together at 8:40. Students are required to wear masks and use hand sanitizer often.

After introducing myself we played a name game where each student had to remember each of their classmates names and something they would bring to a picnic.

As a class we created a poster to display in the room that reminded everyone of the covid safety tips for the school and classroom.

We then moved down stairs to play some dodgeball games for gym. Some friendly and intense competition could be seen all around the court.

After gym the students had a quick snack and we went through the student handbook to review school rules and tips for success.

The students then helped me create a class contract for our room. I have typed up the class contract and will be sending it home tomorrow to be signed by students and parents.

After heading outside for recess on the playground we learned about digital citizenship and how important it is to both adults and students. I sent this form home with everyone today. The last part of our morning we learned about mindfulness and how we would be doing it EVERY day! Meditation and self reflection are so important for young minds in a busy school.

Lunch at 12:30 left us with an hour and a half in our day.

Students became engineers and had to design a tower that would hold up a sharpener. This tower would be constructed in groups of 4 and be made of straws and tape. The students did an excellent job creating their towers and working together. Hopefully they will use what they learned to improve their towers tomorrow, while building with pasta and marshmallows.

This brought us right to 2:40 and the end of our day!

Have a wonderful Wednesday evening everyone!
