Reminders:

Spelling Test Friday

January 28: Pillars of Care assembly

January 31: No school (PD day)

3 Math tests sent home last week+ 1 more this week: Measurement 1, Computation from Nov., Computation from dec. Measurement final test.

Social Cities and Write ups Due TODAY!!! I had several students tell me they are done and left it at home or nearly done. I want these handed in tomorrow so I do not have to make phone calls to parents.

Today in room 16:

We started our morning with a survey on google classroom to measure the students feelings on zones of regulation, sit spots and daily mindfulness. Anyone who has missed this survey can still access it through google classroom.

We then used the next part of our morning to finish reading chapter 18 in Touching Spirit Bear. Today I let the students use technology to answer the different questions after our reading.

After an indoor recess and snack we continued pt 2 of our lesson on triangles and angles. Yesterday we learned about the different ways to classify triangles by angles and sides.

Angles: acute, obtuse and right.

Side lengths: Scalene, isosceles and equilateral.

We learned how to classify triangles by names such as acute equilateral and obtuse scalene!

After math we had a presentation from WE Events about how we can support people in our community through Equity.

Room 16 had mission impossible today with Ms Sterne before lunch and indoor recess.

In the afternoon we had science and explored the concepts of rotation, orbit and revolution. This will help us to understand our day night cycle and the seasons in the year.

January 31: No school (PD day)

3 Math tests sent home this week: Measurement 1, Computation from Nov., Computation from dec.

Today in room 16:

We started our morning with some DEAR time to read our library books from the previous day.

The next chunk of our morning was spent doing a big review of measurement concepts for our test tomorrow. We covered unit conversions, area and perimeter of triangles, rectangles and L shapes, volume of cubes and finding the LWH of a cube that we know the volume of.

We then went outside for recess and time on the compound (Thank goodness for the warmer weather!)

In LA today we did a small group activity to discuss whether the main character of our novel study handled his banishment. Students discussed this serious topic and shared their answers with the class. The last chunk was spent reading another chapter of Touching Spirit Bear.

After LA we had science and continued the daytime amount of sun and observations we can make about the sky. We are graphing the amount of daylight as we go and noticing which planets can be seen each day! We also worked in small groups to create posters showing different things that emit or reflect light in our solar system, atmosphere and classroom.

The students had gym with Ms Sterne today and began gymnastics. The rule is...no neck stuff. Which means, no handstands, flips or holds that would otherwise cause damage to the neck.

We finished our day with some mindfulness meditation before working on our local government cities.

Hope everyone has a Terrific Thursday evening!

Today in room 16:

We started our morning with a welcome back conversation and a reminder of the school, classroom and covid safety rules.

We did a desk change and placed ourselves into rows to keep safe and follow covid protocol.

After setting up our room we had some time to reflect on our winter breaks. Students had 30 minutes to write all about what they did on their break, the food they ate, presents they got and more.

We then went outside for recess and time on the field (Thank goodness for the warmer weather!)

The next chunk of our morning was spent doing review for our test on Friday. We are continuing our exploration of measurement this week focusing on area, perimeter and volume of 2D and 3D shapes. I sent the test from before the break home today. Correcting the work is a great way to see where you went wrong and improve for next time.

After math we had science and began following the daytime amount of sun and observations we can make about the sky. We are graphing the amount of daylight as we go and noticing which planets can be seen each day!

 Happy Wednesday Dec. 15, 2021

Reminders:
  1. December Spirit Days: Wednesday Pyjama Day, Thursday Plaid Day, Friday Holiday gear day.
  2. Patrollers will be happening this year! If you're interested we will be handing out sign up forms next week. We are also looking for some amazing parents that would be willing to support the patrollers by becoming patrol supervisors! Email me at malancee@cbe.ab.ca if you are interested.

  3. No spelling this week!

  4. Last day of class Dec. 17

  5. Secret Santa gifts due tomorrow please!

  6. Area perimeter volume quiz tomorrow!

Today in room 16:

We started our morning with some DEAR and time to work on social cities.

After our morning catch up we did a large math review for the test tomorrow.

The test will be on:

- area and perimeter of triangles, rectangles, and L shapes.

- conversions from mm to cm, cm to mm, km to m, m to km.

-Volume of rectangular prisms.

After math we had a short block to read one chapter of Touching spirit bear and answer questions.

The students practiced caroling in music, and basketball in gym before starting a science lesson.

Today in science we learned about different constellations and how they are viewed by different cultures. Students got together in groups of 5 and 6 to read through a text about different constellations then drew and explained what the constellations were about.

In the afternoon we had some time to play board games during our indoor recess before we worked on social cities for 30 minutes.

The last chunk of our day was spent doing a virtual assembly and singing along with the school to different Christmas songs! It was a fun way to end the day and spread some holiday cheer.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Wednesday evening!

Mayor's Food Drive + Loonies for Lunches

With the holiday season soon approaching it's important to care for others and give back to those who are less fortunate than us.  This holiday season, Beddington Heights School will be a part of 2 programs that the city of Calgary runs for those less fortunate.
The first program is Loonies for Lunches.  Loonies for Lunches would bring students together to collect loonies to donate to the food bank. Each school and/or classroom would create a donation box to collect the loonies and perhaps have some healthy competition to see which class could raise the most. The loonies would then be used by the Food Bank to purchase food for our Weekends and More program that makes sure kids get the nutritious food they need on the weekends to stay healthy and learning.
The Mayor's Food Drive is where we collect non-perishable items, i.e. can goods, sealed boxed items, for Calgary's Food Bank.  Both programs start this Monday to Dec 14th.

  6. Last day of class Dec. 17

  7. Secret Santa gifts due Tuesday Dec 14 please!

  8. Retest for the science quiz will be on Wednesday!

Today in room 16:

We started our morning with some DEAR before diving into volume in math.

To find the volume of a shape you simply multiply the length, width and height!

I would like to give a check in quiz to the students on Thursday to assess their level of understanding with geometry so far.

It will be a mix of area, perimeter and volume.

After math we marked our asteroids and comets reading comprehension questions as a class. This carried us to gym and we played some basketball with teams rotating on and off.

For social today we learned about local government structure and how governments give people a voice. The last 30 minutes was spent working on our social cities.

In the afternoon I started the students on a scavenger hunt using a website and some pre-created questions. We will continue this tomorrow!

Hope everyone has a wonderful evening.

Mr Lancee
